☀️ Summer Heat & Your Dog: Staying Safe in High Temps
As the temperature soars into the 90s and beyond, we’re seeing a seasonal spike in heat-related illnesses, especially heatstroke—a potentially life-threatening emergency for dogs. While summer is a time for outdoor fun, it’s also essential to know how to protect your pet when the heat becomes dangerous.
🔥 Is Your Dog at Higher Risk?
All dogs can suffer from heatstroke, but some are more vulnerable. Your dog may need extra care in the heat if they are:
Overweight or obese
A flat-faced breed (like bulldogs, pugs, or boxers)
Long-haired or double-coated
Dark-coated
A puppy or a senior
Diagnosed with heart or respiratory conditions
A large or giant breed
These dogs may struggle more to regulate their temperature and should be monitored closely.
🚨 Signs of Heatstroke
Heatstroke can set in quickly. Call your nearest veterinary ER immediately if your dog shows any of the following:
Heavy, excessive drooling
Rapid, shallow, or prolonged panting
Bright red or dark gums/tongue
Vomiting or diarrhea
Stumbling, disorientation, or extreme lethargy
Collapse
Body temperature above 105°F
Early intervention can save lives. Left untreated, heatstroke can cause severe organ damage and be fatal.
🌿 How to Keep Your Dog Cool
The good news? There’s plenty you can do to help your dog beat the heat:
🏖️ Always provide shade and airflow
💦 Offer cool, fresh water at all times
🚿 Let them enjoy water play—sprinklers, kiddie pools, or hoses
🐾 Avoid hot pavement—if it’s too hot for your hand, it’s too their paws
🐕 Walk early or late in the day—avoid the midday sun
❄️ Freeze broth, yogurt, or wet food for cooling treats
🧣 Use damp, chilled bandanas for extra comfort
Never leave your dog in a parked car. Even with cracked windows, temperatures can become deadly in minutes.
